The move to cut Carter is interesting because that leaves only two running backs on the roster — Bam Knight and Emari Demercado, who missed the Cardinals' last game with an ankle injury.

After losing starting running back James Conner for the year, the Arizona Cardinals needed someone to step up. Trey Benson looked to be that guy, and fantasy managers who stashed him were feeling pretty good about rostering him.

It's very possible Carter was released to make room for the return of defensive lineman Walter Nolen, the team's first-round pick who is looking to emerge off the PUP list in advance of the Cardinals' Monday Night Football showdown against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9.
