The Central Park drone show on New Year's Eve has been canceled after a drone fell and severely injured a boy at a similar event in Florida.

Central Park will not witness a New Year’s Eve drone show this time. The show has been canceled following the drone accident in Orlando, Florida on December 21, 2024.Previously, there used to be a fireworks show at Central Park but it was canceled by Mayor Eric Adams considering the drought-like conditions.

The New York Road Runners cancelled its fleet of 500 drones less than a week before its annual midnight run event in a decision organizers say was out of their control.

The New York Road Runners customarily shoot off fireworks during their midnight run in the popular Manhattan park, but opted for a drone show after a record brush fire period throughout the city last month.

With Dec. 31 less than a week away, the Central Park show could not go on, according to New York Road Runners, the group that organizes the still-happening Midnight Run through the park on New Year’s Eve. The drone show, like the fireworks most years, was meant to accompany the run.

At least five drone shows have been canceled or have paused the use of the systems, after several drones struck a crowd at a holiday show in Orlando on December 21.

Holiday drone shows have been rising in popularity but some are being cancelled after a mishap in Florida that left a 7-year-old boy badly hurt.
