Older adults and low-income people will have a tougher time accessing food assistance and healthcare services under the House Republicans’ tax bill that will now likely face changes in the Senate.

The provision is a result of a last-minute change to the bill before its passage out of the House early Thursday.

Democrats criticized the vote, but Fitzpatrick says he will work to strengthen safety net programs for the vulnerable while addressing waste, fraud.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Delegates advanced a mega bundle of bills designed to shave billions from the federal budget, which Democrats and advocates have said will take resources from the nation’s most vulnerable citizens and hinder social safety nets.

The bill is part of a broader effort to curb waste and fraud in the program, which provides health coverage to more than 1.8 million low-income Louisianans.
