North Korea’s newest warship was severely damaged during a launch ceremony Wednesday, with leader Kim Jong Un, who witnessed the accident, saying it brought shame to the nation’s prestige and vowing to punish those found responsible,

After a bungled launch, the vessel appears to be stuck and lying on its side in the water. North Korea said it was a 5,000-ton destroyer.

North Korea suffered a “serious accident” during the launch ceremony for a new destroyer, an event that was overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said.

Pyongyang has carried out frequent missile tests in violation of United Nations Security Council sanctions and continues to build out its nuclear weapons program. The Kim Jong Un regime insists both are necessary for self-defense, citing "provocations" by the U.S. and its allies.
