The new county sales tax, 10 cents on every $100 purchase, helps plug a budget shortfall that's been estimated at $150 million.

A measure to raise the sales tax in the city of Redding by 1% appears headed for the ballot. City Clerk Sharlene Tipton told the Record Searchlight on Tuesday that Shasta County elections officials as of Monday had counted 9,073 signatures and found that 6,120 were valid.

The approved 0.1% sales tax measure goes into effect Jan. 1, 2026, to generate new revenue. Without new funding, King County estimates residents would see reduced emergency response capacity, delayed court proceedings, and cuts to violence prevention and behavioral health services.
