Seattle’s push for an NBA team could align with key sports anniversaries, giving new significance to a potential SuperSonics return.

Jon Scholes, president and CEO of the Downtown Seattle Association, said the city is in a far stronger position than when the SuperSonics left in 2008 — with about 200,000 more people now living in Seattle. He also pointed to more hotel capacity and expanded regional transit as key changes that would support a modern NBA franchise.

While a return of the Seattle SuperSonics is not a slam dunk, yet, locals are celebrating that serious steps are finally being taken to bring an NBA team back to the city.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and members of the Seattle City Council shared a joint resolution Tuesday to affirm Seattle’s “readiness” to bring back the Seattle SuperSonics, and affirm that Climate Pledge Arena is prepared to host the team’s return.

With the NBA set to vote on the potential return of the Sonics, the question is, is there enough room on Climate Pledge Arena's calendar?

The league has already eyed Seattle and Las Vegas for the expansion teams. This has been talked ad nauseam for years. But now the dream scenario feels closer to reality. The NBA will hold a board of governors meeting soon to decide on expansion.
