For the first time in 10 years, no hurricane has made landfall in the U.S. through the end of September. Here's why.
To date, Arizona and New Mexico have spent 6 days each in the cone from a pair of tropical systems in the eastern Pacific. That is double the amount of days Florida has spent in the cone during the 2025 season. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama have spent no days in the NHC forecast cone.
Going all the way back to 1842, Texas has never been hit by a tropical system after October 15. The last and only time it came close was that very day, October 15, 1989, when Hurricane Jerry made landfall in Southeast Texas. Jerry came ashore at Jamaica Beach as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 85 mph at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
Want to feel a little better? By early October in 2020, there had been 26 named storms, compared to 12 so far in 2025.
