This blast of cold air is now forecast to impact southern states this weekend, including Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and parts of the Southeast. Along with the cold, there is the potential for cold rain, freezing rain, ice, and even some snow.
National Weather Service forecasters said Thursday that the main concern is the potential for damaging winds — gusts could reach 60 mph — and tornadoes. Heavy rains of 1-3 inches per hour could also bring flash flooding as far south as New Orleans.
The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) is urging everyone to prepare for freezing temperatures and the potential for wintry conditions across the northern half of Louisiana.
While scattered showers are expected Wednesday through Friday, the real concern arrives Saturday night into Sunday, when a cold rain event — and potentially significant ice — could move into the region.
South Louisiana is forecast to experience strong to severe storms Friday and possibly into Saturday morning, forecasters with the National Weather Service said.
