A thief who stole Christmas gifts in Fontana was almost responsible for the death of Sparky the dog — who was hit by a car and lost for two days after the thief failed to close the gate behind him.

What started as about $100 worth of stolen packages has now resulted in more than $8,000 in emergency veterinary bills.
