Already strained by federal funding cuts earlier in the year and a surge in demand from furloughed federal workers, food banks face a fresh wave of need as SNAP benefits end Saturday.
As nearly 2 million Illinois residents prepare to lose federal food assistance Saturday amid the government shutdown, Gov. Pritzker signed an executive order Thursday directing $20 million toward food banks across the state.

The donation as SNAP benefits for nearly 42 million Americans are set to stop on November 1 due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown.
The $5 million will not come close to what the federal government typically sends SNAP recipients in Oregon in a typical month.
