Donkey Kong has looked pretty much the same since Rare put out Donkey Kong Country in 1994, but it looks like Mario Kart 9 might be a turning point for the character, as he now resembles his Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo fans were divided on the ape’s movie-like appearance, but if a recent discovery on the Donkey Kong subreddit is any indication, the redesign is here to stay.

Interestingly, Mario Kart 9 has some different character designs for some of the drivers. The biggest one we spotted is the new Donkey Kong look. It resembles his look from Super Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo, which is an interesting decision. Will Nintendo perhaps have different skins for characters?

With so many IPs, Nintendo has the potential to create the best Mario Kart by adding in these crossover characters.

Mario Kart 9 has big shoes to fill, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 64.27 million copies, which includes copies sold in hardware bundles. It is far and away the Switch's best-selling game ever, far outpacing the No. 2 game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which has sold 46.45 million copies.
