Lucas Raymond’s strong play with the Detroit Red Wings carried over for Sweden Wednesday in the 4 Nations Face-Off opener. Raymond picked up a pair of assists, but Canada defeated Sweden 4-3 on Mitch Marner’s goal at 6:06 of overtime at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond’s two assists were not enough to prevent Sweden from falling 4-3 to Canada in overtime in the opening game of 4 Nations Face-off. The Swedes rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game 3-3.

Larkin (Team USA) and Raymond (Sweden) are the only two Wings competing in the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off beginning Wednesday in Montreal.

Some may view the break in the NHL season for the 4 Nations Face-Off as nothing more than a money grab, but don’t count Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond among that group. The Swedish star will be wearing his country’s colors in the mist of the NHL’s first best on best tournament in nearly a decade. To him, that’s kind of a big deal.

Larkin is representing the United States and Raymond Sweden during the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off. The round-robin best-on-best tournament in Boston and Montreal starts Wednesday when Canada meets Sweden. The U.S. plays Finland on Thursday in its opener.
