The Emmy-nominated actor became a television staple, also appearing in movies like "Julius Caesar," "The Three Musketeers," "The Towering Inferno," and "The Last Wave."

The actor, who began his career starring in ABC's Dr. Kildare (1961-66), became known as "king of the TV miniseries" in 1978 when he landed the starring role in NBC's Centennial, an epic production 24 hours long and based on James Michener's sprawling novel.

The Golden Globe-winning actor was also known for his work on stage and in "Shōgun," "The Thorn Birds," "Centennial" and "The Three Musketeers"
