Apple Inc. is in early discussions about using Google Gemini to power a revamped version of the Siri voice assistant, marking a key potential step toward outsourcing more of its artificial intelligence technology.

Apple is in early talks to use Google's Gemini AI to revamp the Siri voice assistant, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to a Thursday blog post, Google is beginning to roll out agentic capabilities to its AI Mode. For now, the only agentic capability available is restaurant reservations. Users will be able to ask AI mode to find them a reservation that matches their specific needs, including party size, date, time, location, and preferred food type.

Finally, we’re seeing a new look for the app’s search interface. So far, Maps gets you started with a search by pulling up all your recent activity, in case you wanted to repeat a recent destination. Instead of that, developers are also considering an alternate layout that would add an Explore option to check out place categories:

The company previously approached OpenAI and Anthropic for similar discussions about using their technology to power Siri, and reportedly, Google has begun training a model that could run on Apple’s servers. Apple is not expected to make a decision about whether to bring on a partner for the Siri revamp for another several weeks.
