🦋🍅 Protect Your Tomatoes from Hornworms Naturally!🍅🦋 Tomato hornworms (Manduca quinquemaculata) are notorious for their voracious appetite and can devastate your tomato plants in no time. But don’t reach for the insecticide just yet! 👉 If you spot these pesky caterpillars, simply pick them off and drop them in soapy water. However, if you notice hornworms with white oblong cocoons, leave them be! These cocoons are from parasitic wasps. The female wasp lays her eggs under the hornworm’s skin

What is a Tomato hornworn (Manduca quinquemaculata) and braconid wasp? Relocated to black nightshade. They eat other Solanaceous plants like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, Jimsonweed, and Horsenettle. They cocoon and turn into 5 spotted hawk moths that pollinate at night. The caterpillars can become infected with braconid wasp larvae that look like they are covered in rice. They parasitically eat the caterpillar. The wasp are harmless unless provoked #tomatohornworm #braconidwasp | ditch_the_flock

The craziest thing happened! The night the mystery moth emerged, I went out to our black light to see what insects had shown up. And guess what!! Two other Manduca neglecta were there!! A moth I had never seen in my life, all the sudden there are 2 at the sheet! And neither yesterday night nor tonight has any more shown up. It seems like they all emerge the same exact day to mate and lay eggs! They may not be seen for the majority of the year until the exact days the adults emerge, hence why thi

La polilla cuyo nombre significa “devorar” 🦋 The Moth Whose Name Means “To Devour” The moth Manduca sexta has a fascinating name origin. “Manduca” comes from the Latin manducare, meaning “to chew or devour,” referring to the extremely hungry caterpillars that feed on plants like tomato and tobacco. Scientific names often hide surprising stories about the biology of the species. #ManducaSexta #Polillas #Moths #Etimología #Naturaleza

Jack Forrester on Instagram: "The adult moth of our beloved tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta), also known as the Carolina sphinx moth. Here is a time-lapse of a freshly eclosed sphinx moth inflating its wings! Carolina sphinx moths are incredibly important native pollinators in North America! Thanks to their incredibly long tongues, they’re able to feed from many flowers that most other native pollinators can’t. Fully extended, the proboscis of a tobacco hornworm moth measures twice the length of

Jack Forrester on Instagram: "The tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) is one of the most well known caterpillars in North America, for better or for worse. Perhaps a “hate it or love it” species, but we certainly love them at @the_caterpillar_lab. They’re perfect for handling, educating about caterpillar morphology, pupa wiggling, and are all around just a great story to tell about the importance of native species! This species is a common sight in gardens, where they can make quick work of the tom
