Episode 2: What to plant in the middle of the border. Remember to think about height and shape as well as repetition, but also bring in some of those ethereal taller plants to bring in an extra dimension. There are loads of plant options for this planting layer and I list my favourite towards the end for you to experiment with. 🌱🌱 Caveat - My garden planting is brand new, so it's not the best example as the plants are still very young, but I've a mix of those listed in the middle layer. If you do one thing to improve the look of your planting borders this year, let it be this! (And bonus - it's completely free). By lifting and dividing your perennials to mass them into greater groups and then repeat them around the garden you are instantly going to elevate your borders to something more cohesive and rhythmic. You won't find a designed garden without planting repetition - and now's the perfect time to put this into action - just grab a spade and start dividing! Plants you can di

In this new series, I will be talking you through my absolute favourite plants, that I wouldn't be without and that you might want to plant too. First up we're talking Hardy geraniums - one of the hardest working, lowest maintenance plants you could possibly add to your garden. Happy in full sun to part shade and most soil types - she flowers from April/May to the frosts - a good 6-7 months. There are so many to choose from: Azure rush, Orion, Brookside, Rozanne, Patricia, Dreamland, Album or Ra

How did I design my dining terrace? Well let me show you and first up I'm going to explain the levels I've chosen and why. I've gone against the grain of the popular level threshold in favour of steps which bring me down into the dining space. In this instance, where the house sits higher than the garden, this feels more intimate and inviting. The terrace still sits above the lawn beyond, with further steps leading down into the heart of the garden adding the much strived for 'journey' I love to

A super simple class on deadheading Salvias such as the ever popular Caradonna. Simply cut each flower spike once it's gone over and then when the top cluster is done, take it down to the next set of buds. When it completely stops flowering cut the whole thing down to the ground and more new growth and hopefully blooms (depending on how far through the season we are) will emerge. ✂️ Gimme those questions in the comments | Pollyanna Wilkinson Garden Design

The biggest mistake with lavender is not pruning it straight after flowering to keep it in check. Not pruning equals Woody stems, a messy form and potentially even less flowers follow these simple instructions to have beautiful lavender year on year. 💜 | Pollyanna Wilkinson Garden Design

Now is the perfect time to divide perennials. You can do this every 2-4 years to prevent overcrowding, (or just to increase your plant inventory!) but also to ensure the plant maintains its vigour. Essentially - dig up - divide with a spade, lever apart with garden forks or even an old bread knife or saw. Replant one in the original spot and the others wherever you wish. Water well! This list of perennials you can divide is long - but here's a few to get you started: Agapanthus, Anemone, Aster,

No need to panic if we get a hard frost or scattering of snow - your spring bulbs will be totally fine! In fact snow can even act as protection for some! No need to cover or frankly do anything at all....except wait for them to bloom in spring. 🌱 | Pollyanna Wilkinson Garden Design

Here's your April garden design tip! Get outside and take an inventory - do you have spring interest in the garden in the form of blossom and bulbs? If not - that's a lost opportunity to celebrate one of the BEST bits of spring, and it's going to help pollinators too. Think about adding some spring blossoming trees to your space - good options include Cherries (Prunus), Crab apples (Malus) Ornamental pear (Pyrus) Hawthorn (Crataegus) or Amelanchier. For bulbs, think about adding a succession fro

Here's what I'm growing in my heavenly @alitex_ greenhouse this April, and a bit of a greenhouse tour too. April is the perfect time to sow annual cut flowers such as cosmos, scabious and snapdragons. And of course it's also a great time to sow vegetable seeds - my greenhouse is stuffed full of courgettes, tomatoes, chilies, and beans the former of which are waiting for the frosts to pass before braving the great outdoors. If you don't have a greenhouse then a warm and sunny windowsill will do t

It's time to cut down your deciduous ornamental grasses which were left standing over winter. This includes Miscanthus, Calamagrostis & Hakonechloa, Pennisetum but check the RHS website if ever in doubt. Cut the entire clump back to a few centimetres from ground level and new shoots will soon appear. You can use secateurs, shears, even a hedge trimmer and you might want to wear gloves as the blades can be sharp! For evergreen grasses you need do very little other than remove any dead leaves in s

Pollyanna Wilkinson on Instagram: "Lesson 8: Zoning plans. Draw up your measured garden and overlay this with tracing paper so you don't need to redraw your plan each time. First, trace out the rough outline of your garden and now plot out your key zones. Don't get bogged down in detail or the small stuff, this is really high level. Repeat a few times until the general zones feel like they are in the right spot. Remember to factor in your sunlight to maximise the garden at different times of day
