I post a lot of hydrangea content but I’m still getting a lot of questions so I’m just going to keep going! 😆 This kind of hydrangea is a macrophylla. (The “Old wood” type). New growth is coming in on the bottom and the buds that formed last year are the flowers for this year. I don’t think any of these are active because of a major cold snap but maybe we’ll be surprised. How do you know when the stems on your big leaf/Macrophylla hydrangea are dead? It depends on which variety you have and where you live but if they are brown, with no growth on them and/or the buds aren’t turning green by mid-May, I would cut them down to the ground and cross your fingers you have a hybrid because then you will likely get flowers off the new growth (Endless Summer is an example but some people rushed reported issues with these.)It’s often too cold in New England and other areas

It's mid-June and I'm still encountering hydrangeas that need pruning and plenty of questions about these confusing plants! If you have a macrophylla/"Big Leaf" hydrangea and you haven't pruned them down, do it now. Sorry, but nothing is going to grow on those old stalks at this point. They are almost certainly dead so trim above any new growth that is there or all the way down to the bottom. And remove the loose dead stuff that's there, to make room for the new growth that should be coming in.

If there is no life on your stalks it's probably time to cut them back. The reason I say it's optional is because you can be lazy and leave them and the new growth (on which buds will form for NEXT year) will likely cover them up.Many people had cold snaps this year and flowers will be reduced or non-existent.
