In 1937, director Tex Avery introduced a new character to the Merrie Melodies series: Egghead. The basic story is that Egghead eventually "evolved" into Elmer Fudd, and that's essentially true...but it's a bit complicated. Marketing materials of the time identified Egghead and "Elmer" as two different characters. But even the animators appeared to be confused about the difference, as the character (or characters) had the same basic design, but the voice, personality, and name varied on-screen. S
