We are a nation of villages. The name "Canada" comes from the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word kanata, which means "village" or "settlement". In the 16th century, two Indigenous youths used the word to describe the village of Stadacona to the French explorer Jacques Cartier, and he later used "Canada" to refer to the surrounding region and eventually the entire country.
