In preparing for the opening of the Monroe Museum we had 2 meetings with people who had lived on the mill village, worked in the mill, had parents who worked in the mill, or played baseball on the mill team. Over the last several weeks, we have discussed Monroe's oldest homes, which we might call heritage homes. Two of the largest neighborhoods of heritage homes are our mill villages. At its height, the Monroe Mill Village had about 85 homes, with construction starting in the 1890s. The Walton Mill Village had about 178 homes. From our records, it appears that most of the homes were constructed in the early 1920s, making them 100 years old. In this short video, John King explains the different floor
