Bird species #34 - Yellowhammer These beautiful buntings are most common around countryside and fields where they are residents year round. Found in shrubs and hedgerows, they are shy with a short flight pattern and like to perch to sing their distinctive song. They are hardly seen in the wider area of Strathspey and rarely in badenoch, but more common the furthur east where farming fields are more plentiful. Their call is a sharp 'zeep, zeep, zeep.' Yellowhammers are seed eaters, predominantly eating grass seeds, however they feed their chicks, insects. They are often seen foraging and feeding on the ground throughout the year and will join larger flocks of finches in the winter.
