Catching a giant isopod on the move is treat! Food is usually scarce in the cold, deep-sea natural habitat of these animals, so giant isopods are always in a state of semi-hibernation. This behavior allows them to limit the use of energy needed for movement and breathing and go long periods of time without eating. Once the opportunity to feast presents itself, giant isopods gorge themselves to the point where they have trouble moving around. | Shedd Aquarium
